With an obvious and distinct sound of his own, Mayer’s guitar stylings pay homage to some of the tastier jazz, soul, and rock players of new & old. Mayer’s philosophy is that soul, personality, & emotional content, are the elements that truly move people in music. Having experienced playing, specifically, in a Hammond organ trio’s for over seven years, Mayer has had the time and experience to develop his own musical voice within that particular trio setting. With steady residencies in Santa Cruz & San Francisco, CA, Danny has been forced to learn how to keep an audience’s attention night after night. “To me, it’s all about feeling the room out, & feeding off the crowd. You can start off slow & take your time, but eventually the goal is to fill the room up with energy, until it gets so full it feels like it’s about to explode! That’s when I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing. It’s also becoming more of a way for me to express certain emotions & aspects of my personality that I’m only comfortable expressing trough music.”
In 2006, Mayer formed On The Spot (OTS) Trio with keyboardist Kris Yunker & original drummer Emery Nelson. On The Spot Trio now, with Jeff Wilson on drums, has grown into a widely recognized, Hammond Organ driven, psychedelic funk trio! Mayer is also a former member of 7 Come 11, another Santa Cruz based Hammond trio, with a long standing weekly residency in Santa Cruz @ The Crepe Place.
However, in 2012 everything changed. Danny was enlisted by Alan Evans, drummer of the legendary group Soulive, to be one third of The Alan Evans Trio, with Alan on drums and vocals and Beau Sasser on Hammond Organ. In the past year the trio has recorded 2 full length albums (Drop Hop & MERKABA *Royal Family Records), released a 45 on Colemine Records, completed 3 nation tours, & about 6 mini-tours, played a slew of festivals, & has absolutely no plans of slowing down anytime in the near future. Alan Evans Trio (AE3) is quickly becoming recognized as one of the hardest hitting, hardest working, soulful trios on the scene today!
